Who were the Huguenots?
Correct Answer: Refugees from France
The Huguenots were French Protestants who fled persecution in France and came to Britain as refugees. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 by King Louis XIV, French Protestants lost their legal protections and many faced violent persecution.
Tens of thousands of Huguenots settled in Britain, particularly in London (in areas such as Spitalfields and Soho), Canterbury and Norwich. They brought with them skilled trades, including silk weaving, watchmaking and banking, contributing significantly to Britain's economic development. The Huguenots are one of the earliest examples of Britain absorbing skilled refugees who enriched the country.
