When did the English civil war start?
Correct Answer: 1642
The English Civil War began in 1642. It was a series of armed conflicts between the Royalists (supporters of King Charles I) and the Parliamentarians (known as Roundheads, supporters of Parliament).
The war arose from long-running disputes between Charles I and Parliament over taxation, religion and royal power. The Parliamentarians, led by Oliver Cromwell, ultimately won. Charles I was tried for treason against his own people and executed in 1649 — the only time an English monarch has been put on trial and executed. Cromwell then ruled England as Lord Protector until his death in 1658. The monarchy was restored in 1660 with Charles II.
