When was slavery abolished throughout the British Empire?
Correct Answer: 1833
Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire by the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. This landmark legislation made it illegal to own enslaved people across all British territories, freeing approximately 800,000 enslaved people in the Caribbean, South Africa and Canada.
The abolition movement had been led for decades by figures such as William Wilberforce, Olaudah Equiano and the Quakers. The slave trade (transporting enslaved people between Africa and the Americas) had been abolished earlier, in 1807, by the Slave Trade Act.
Note: In practice, enslaved people were not immediately free — many were subject to a period of "apprenticeship" that lasted until 1838.
