Why did Henry VIII marry Anne of Cleves?
Correct Answer: For political reasons
Henry VIII married Anne of Cleves (his fourth wife) for political reasons.
His chief minister Thomas Cromwell arranged the marriage to create an alliance with the Protestant Duke of Cleves in Germany. Henry was shown a flattering portrait by Hans Holbein but was reportedly very disappointed when he met Anne in person.
The marriage was annulled after just six months. Cromwell was subsequently executed partly for his role in arranging the disastrous match.
