Correct Answer: The local community
Magistrates and Justices of the Peace (JPs) are members of the local community.
They are volunteers (unpaid judges) who hear cases in Magistrates' Courts — dealing with lower-level criminal cases, motoring offences, and some civil matters.
Magistrates are not legally qualified but receive training and are supported by a legal adviser in court. They are appointed by the Lord Chancellor on the recommendation of local advisory committees.
