What is the meaning of the term ‘first past the post’?
Correct Answer: In each constituency, the candidate who gets the most votes is elected
First past the post is the electoral system used for UK general elections, where the candidate who receives the most votes in each constituency is elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for that area.
A candidate does not need to win a majority of all votes cast — they simply need more votes than any other candidate to win the seat.
